Resident Educator Mentor Academy Training is a hybrid event. New mentors to the Resident Educator Program are required to successfully complete the 12-hour Mentor Academy Training to receive state mentor certification. The Academy focuses on the role of the mentor and the critical components of instructional mentoring. Mentors are introduced to the essential content of mentoring to prepare them to support the instructional growth and development of Resident Educators. This is a hybrid training requiring participants to access both the ODE Learning Management System and the Virtual meetings are held by Hamilton County ESC.

In this important Orton-Gillingham follow-up course, master teachers continue to coach teachers who have taken the Orton-Gillingham Multisensory Reading Practicum I ONLINE in implementing multisensory, structured language instruction. The course encompasses 45 hours of content as well as 54 lessons of multisensory teaching through lesson plans and samples of student work under the supervision of a master teacher over a period of at least 9 months, monitoring student’s progress. Using the Sibme Platform, master teachers will observe designated lessons and provide corrective feedback during the planning and delivery of these lessons. Participants will read and respond to the book, The Reading Mind: A Cognitive approach to understanding how the mind reads by Daniel T.Willingham. This course is required for Orton-Gillingham Certification.

Optional College Credit can be purchased at an additional cost through Ashland University.

The Orton-Gillingham Multisensory Reading Practicum I Online encompasses 16 weeks of instruction, including 45 hours of lecture and a 12-hour practicum. The course focuses on the phonology, orthography and structure of the English language; takes a comprehensive look at how students learn to read and write; and helps teachers to recognize the characteristics of learning disabilities. What makes Hamilton County ESC’s program unique is the practicum: each participant is assigned to a Master Teacher who provides one-to-one coaching and feedback on the creation and teaching of 9 lesson plans custom-tailored for the student the participant is tutoring during the course. Using the Sibme platform, participants upload their lessons and videos of their instruction, enabling instructors to give specific feedback at point of need on both planning and implementation of OG methodology. The maximum instructor/participant ratio in any cohort is 8:1.
