WORKSHOP DESCRIPTION: This one-day Learning Institute will provide both an overview of inclusive practices and co-teaching as well as detailed information about planning, implementing, and evaluating co-teaching programs. The No Child Left Behind Act, the reauthorization of federal special education legislation, and the increasing diversity of students in public schools have brought increased pressure for educators to meet higher standards and address the diverse needs of all learners.
WORKSHOP OBJECTIVES: 1. Define co-teaching and distinguish it from terms such as collaboration, team teaching, and inclusion. 2. Relate co-teaching to current trends toward inclusive schooling in public schools. 3. Provide a rationale through philosophy, research, and recent legislation for implementing inclusive practices and co-teaching. 4. Discuss critical components of a teacher’s model for co-teaching. 5. Describe at least six different types of co-teaching arrangements, and determine situations for which each is appropriate and inappropriate. 6. Identify key topics to address with a co-teacher prior to co-teaching. 7. Describe strategies for addressing pragmatic issues related to co-teaching (for example, time and scheduling, assignment of students to classes, amount of co-teaching). 8. Identify key considerations for evaluating co-teaching programs. 9. Understand the importance of instructional accommodations for co-taught classrooms. 10. Address common instructional issues that occur in co-taught classes, including addressing the learning needs of struggling readers and fairness in assessment and grading.
